Intent

Physical Education at Gotherington Primary School encompasses more than just being active, it’s about developing the necessary skills needed to confidently compete in sports, understanding the importance of physical and mental health, the confidence to take on leadership roles and also the ability to push oneself to achieve a personal best. It is our aim to provide our children with a breadth of memorable PE experiences which leads to children developing a lifelong love of physical activity, sport and PE. Through the opportunities provided, children’s wellbeing develops, physical skills improve, sporting knowledge becomes secure and competitive spirit is seen. By the time our students leave us, they will be well equipped with the skills, the knowledge, and the confidence required to actively participate in the competitive sporting world around them. They will be made familiar with various different sports, the rules, skills and tactics needed to play them, so that they can confidently be part of any sporting activity offered to them.

Implementation

Our detailed progression map along with GetSet4PE ensures that all teachers are equipped with the secure subject knowledge required to deliver modern, high-quality teaching and learning opportunities for all areas of the PE National Curriculum. Our overarching aim is for teachers to have the knowledge and skills they need to feel confident in teaching all areas of PE, regardless of their main areas of expertise and this is achieved through CPD. The PE and Sports Premium is invested into CPD to ensure that all staff are confident in delivering a range of sporting activities, providing the highest quality teaching for the children. Staff then share what they have learnt through their CPD with other members of staff. Staff use GetSet4PE, along with any additional lesson plans they have attained from CPD. Summative and formative assessment is carried out and attainment and progress is tracked using ‘Insight’ which is our school’s assessment tracker. Our children experience a vast range of physical opportunities throughout their lessons including skateboarding, ultimate Frisbee, tri-golf and handball. We offer a variety of extra-curricular sporting opportunities such as football, dodgeball, multi-skills and basketball and these change throughout the year to engage as many children as possible. We use pupil voice to establish what clubs run and in what year group. At Gotherington, we take part in the Daily Mile, inter-school and intra-school competitions and we run whole-school taster activities to give children an opportunity to try something new such as archery, fencing, rock climbing, speed stacking and kidditch. In and outside of school sporting achievements are celebrated weekly in our Celebration Assembly and newsletter and we also run an annual Celebration of Sport Evening.

Impact
Our PE. curriculum facilitates sequential learning and long-term progression of knowledge and skills. Teaching and learning methods provide regular opportunities to recap acquired knowledge through high quality questioning, discussion, modelling and explaining, to aid retrieval at the beginning and end of a lesson or unit. This will enable all children to commit learning to their long-term memory, know more, remember more and be able to do more as children living a healthy lifestyle whilst fostering a lifelong love of physical activity, sport and PE. As a school, we have been awarded the School Games Gold Award every year since the academic Year 2017-18. We assess the impact of our PE curriculum through questioning during lessons, data inputted onto Insight, pupil voice and learning walks.
