Sporting Highlights Academic Year 2016/17
Prince of Wales Athletics – Gotherington took a large team of athletes to compete in the Prince of Wales Athletics Finals at the Prince of Wales Stadium in Cheltenham. Competing against mainly large schools, some of which were three times as big, the team finished a very respectable 11th. There were some real highlights with the Y4 boys’ relay team winning bronze, Oliva H in Year 6 winning individual sprint silver and the all-conquering Year 6 Girls’ relay team winning gold. A wonderful achievement!!
Girls’ Football - the girls' football team played Richard Pates School. The girls played fantastically well and won both games after scoring plenty of great goals. We had amazing support from parents which helped spur us on. Thank you!
Prince of Wales Athletics Field Event –Well done to the Year 6 pupils, Zack, Huw, Albie, Ewan, Katie, Lily and Anna who took part in the field events for the Prince of Wales. They jumped or threw as far as they could against some tough competition.
Year 1 Multi Skills – Year 1 took part in a multi-skills event at Cleeve Secondary School. There were 16 teams in total competing. We had 3 teams - Team Gazelle, Team Lion and Team Hare (The theme was fast animals). Congratulations to Team Lion, who won first place scoring the most points. The team were very proud of the medals they collected. Well done Team Lion!
Kinball – Pupils in Year 5 were given a Kinball workshop on Tuesday. Kinball is a team sport created in Quebec, Canada. Players use a large 1.22 meters ball and the matches are played among three teams at the same time. The pupils enjoyed the session and some will be selected to play in a tournament at Cleeve School in July.
Mountain Bike County Finals – Well done to the Mountain bike team who took part in the County Final event held at Hartbury College. The team worked really hard and showed great team spirit. Well done to Toby P, Louis S, Jasmine S and Phoebe M. The pupils also had the chance to have a go at Zorb football during the lunch break!
Kick Rounders Festival - Year 2 travelled to Kayte Lane to take part in a Kick rounders tournament with other local primary schools. Our team played extremely well and showed fantastic team spirit and secured themselves first place. Congratulations Year 2!
Mini Red Tennis event – Four pupils from Year 4 Aidan D, Ben V, Phoebe M, and Ellie M were invited to take part in a tennis festival held at East Glos. Tennis Club.
Gloucestershire School Sport Award - We were delighted to be told that the school has been shortlisted for a PE and Sport award for “Improving physical activity and health enhancing initiatives”. This is a real achievement and reflects the efforts of children, staff and parents in supporting a wide range of sporting initiatives.
Quad Kids event – 10 children took part in a Quadkids festival at St Edwards. All children participated in 4 events: 50m sprint, standing long jump, 400m and a Vortex throw. Everyone did very well, achieving great scores and showing great determination throughout the afternoon.
‘Balanceability’ – Reception class started their balanceability sessions. They will be learning how to ride bikes and completing lots of different cycling challenges over the next 12 weeks.
Gymnastics sessions – Pupils in Year 4 and 6 took part in the first of six gymnastic sessions as part of their PE curriculum.
Mountain biking - Year 5 pupils took part in the Mountain Bike Challenge at Winchcombe School. Our team; Maddie B, Jasmine S, Louis S, and Toby P returned with Silver medals, finishing just 12 minutes behind the winners. There were 17 other schools taking part, well done to the team, this was a great result!
Netball Match - The netball team played their final match of the term at home against Dunalley Primary School. The team played well together and showed great sportsmanship.
Tag-Rugby Festival – Pupils from Year 4, 5 and 6 attended a Tag Rugby tournament at Newlands Rugby Club. Despite the poor weather, the team played brilliantly, only losing one of their games, many of which were against bigger school teams containing older pupils.
Swimming – Year 3 had their final swimming session. Miss Turley has seen a significant improvement in all of the pupils swimming techniques during the 10 session period.
Football Tournament – The girls' football team took part in a large festival at Prestbury. They had a fantastic afternoon and won their group in style, beating Holy Apostles 3-0, Gretton 4-0 and Prestbury 5-0. After going through to the next round, they were unfortunately beaten by a very strong Leckhampton side however they left the festival with their heads held high having done Gotherington proud. Well done all!
Netball Match – The Netball team played a home match against Winchcombe Abbey School. The pupils played fantastically as a team and came away with a very impressive 21-1 victory! They showed great sportsmanship and team spirt throughout the match.
Feet First Dance Festival – Well done to the Year 5 and 6 pupils who took part in the Dance Festival. They impressed the audience with their 50’s dance which was set to music from the film ‘Grease’.
Football Match – On Monday the school football team played a match against Aithrie. In a thrilling game against a talented Airthrie side, the team lost 7:4. Well done to everyone involved. The team played their second game of the week against Ashchurch and managed to clinch a 1-0 win through Albie H’s late goal. The team played some lovely football and kept possession well throughout the game. Well done!
Cross Country – Well done to all the children who took part in the final cross country run at The Vineyards in Tewkesbury. The race was followed by prize giving. Cora B (Y6) was presented with a trophy for coming 6th and Jasmine S (Y5) was awarded a medal for coming 12th overall in the girls. Gotherington came 5th overall in the large schools competition.
Tag-Rugby Tournament – 12 Year 5 pupils participated in a tag-rugby festival at Charlton Kings School. Although we were the smallest school there, our teams played extremely well against some tough opposition. They even received some great tips from an “Old Pates” coach. Many thanks to the parents who stayed to cheered our team on despite the freezing cold.
Netball Match – The Netball team had a match against Leckhampton School. Although the team lost they showed great sportsmanship and all played with determination and passion.
Football Match – Well done to our football team who played Holy Trinity. Although they lost this match they all showed tremendous team spirit.
Girls' Football Tournament – Two girls’ football teams took part in a football tournament on the astroturf pitch at Kayte Lane. Both teams played very well in the damp conditions. The A team had tremendous success and progressed to the final, coming second overall. This is wonderful achievement for the team who were playing in their first tournament together.
Football Match – The School football team played Glenfall away. The team played well in very damp conditions. In what proved to be a really entertaining game, Gotherington won 3:2 with a last minute goal by Eddie L. The team played really well, particularly in defence.
Y3 Swimming Lessons – Year 3 started the first of 10 swimming lessons at Leisure@Cheltenham.
Year 6 Dance Sessions – Year 6 pupils took part in the first of 4 Street Dance sessions run by the Coady Crew in the hall.
Sports Hall Athletics – The school took a team of athletes to take part in the Sports Hall Athletics Festival at Tewkesbury School. A team made up of children from Years 4 to 6 competed in events such as ‘speed bounce’, ‘relay’ and ‘obstacle course’. The team faced some very good opposition but did really well to finish 5th out of 8 teams. Ava S in Year 4 and Huw E in Year 6 received School Games Values awards for self-belief and passion respectively. Well done to everyone for competing with so much determination and enthusiasm.
Netball Match – The Netball Team played an away match against St James’ School. The team played really well together but were not able to secure a victory. Further matches will be played before the end of term.
Swimming Gala – 12 pupils took part in the Cleeve Cluster swimming gala. All pupils swam fantastically and impressed the judges with their jumps and dives. Overall, Gotherington 1 scored 33 points and Gotherington 2 scored 10 points. Cora B fought off competition from other schools to win the individual front crawl race.
Netball Match – The Netball team played well against a strong team from Woodmancote Primary School. Celia & Lily commented “we tried our hardest, but unfortunately weren’t able to beat them, we did enjoy the game.” The players showed determination and team spirit even though the score line was not as we had hoped!
Football Match – The football team played against Christ Church in a football match. The team displayed some fantastic football and worked together very well as a team. The final score was 4-1 to Christ Church.
Football – Out football team continued their fine form by winning 2:1 against St John’s. Congratulations to everyone involved.
Football - The football team played an away match at Gardners Lane School. The team played really well with the final score being another win, 3-1.
Rugby Year 5 – Year 5 took part in an Anti-bullying themed rugby session run by Tom Knibbs of Gloucester Rugby Club.
Cross Country – Pupils from Year 5 and Year 6 took part in the Tewkesbury Schools Cross Country event. The top 6 Gotherington places for both events are listed below:
Jasmine S (5th), Cora B (6th), Zack H (8th) Louis S (12th), Archie B (15th), Huw E (32nd)
Cora B (7th), Jasmine S (8th), Louis S (15th), Tom G (17th), Maddie B (28th), Louis W (45th).
All children showed fantastic sportsmanship during the races and put in 100% effort.
Netball Tournament – The netball team took part in a netball tournament at Tewkesbury Secondary School. They played 5 matches, lost one, drew one, and won 3. The team thoroughly enjoyed playing the matches and look forward to their next game. (Written by Celia B and Anna B)
Football Match – The football team played against Gardner’s Lane School. The team worked really well together and came away with a very impressive victory of 8-0! Well done to them all.
Tag Rugby - Pupils in Year 5 took part in a Tag Rugby festival. The team won three games and lost one. A total of 15 tries saw the team finish 5th out of 15, narrowly missing out on a semi-final spot. The team worked really well together, thank you to Mr Lewis and his assistants Mrs Khan and Mrs Sawle for coaching the team and to parents who transported the pupils.
Cross Country written by Archie B & Zack H (Year 6)
On Thursday 22nd September a cross country event took place at the Vineyards in the
Tewkesbury where just under 250 pupils took part. All Gotherington pupils did very well and most
of them came in the top 50. The top 5 Gotherington places were:
1. Cora B (6th), 2. Jasmine S (11th) 3. Zack H (13th) 4. Louis s (14th) 5. Archie B (21st)
Football Match v St Johns - Gotherington Primary School football team played a game against St Johns Primary. Archie and Eddie (Y6) gave the following account of the match:
In the first 10 minutes we were dominating possession but St Johns managed to sneak a goal past us.
At the start of the second half their striker scored past our keeper, leaving the score at 2-0. We then
scored, off the post, following our goal we had most of the possession and worked really well as a team to
score the second goal. Now we were level! A brilliant ball was played through towards our goal and a
fantastic strike secured the third goal for Gotherington. The final score was 3-2 to Gotherington!
Prince of Wales Athletics Tournament - A team of athletes took part in the Large Schools Primary Athletics Championship which was held at the Prince of Wales Stadium in Cheltenham. Considering we are a small school, we were delighted to be 10th out of 16 schools. Events included individual sprints for boys and girls in Y3, 4, 5 and 6; Relays for boys and girls in Y3, 4, 5 & 6 and long distance for boys and girls in Y5 and 6. Every team competed with great desire and enthusiasm, in what for some of them was their first experience of a big event in front of a large crowd. Congratulations go to Olivia H who came 2nd in the Y5, 75m sprint; Jack J who came 7th in the Y6 100m sprint; the Y5 girl’s relay who came 3rd and the Y3 boy’s relay who came7th. A special mention goes to Olivia H in Y5 who was really unwell on the day but summoned up the energy and courage to perform as she didn’t want to let her team down.
House Rounders – All pupils took part in House Rounders as part of the ‘Health and Well-being’ week. Sudeley came first with Warwick second, Berkeley and Thornbury were joint third.
Equestrian competition - Ellie B in Year 6 took part in an NSEA equestrian competition in Hartbury representing Gotherington School on her pony Simply Flo. Ellie did very well in her first class coming 2nd and had an unlucky 4 faults in her second class.
Athletics Olympic Torch Event – Congratulations to Olivia H in Year 5 who was the winner of the girl’s individual sprint at the Athletics Olympic Torch Event when the competed at St Edwards.
Rugby Coaching – Coaches from the Sky Try Rugby programme attended school to deliver the first of six rugby sessions to Year 3 pupils.
Rounders Festival – Year 2 took part in a Kick Rounders Tournament with 5 other schools at Kayte Lane playing fields. All of the Y2 pupils took part and played each match with great enthusiasm, despite the heat.
Athletics Olympic Torch Event – Pupils in Year 5 and Year 4 represented the school in field events at St Edwards School. They all enjoyed the event on a sunny afternoon and performed well. Congratulations to Celia, Anna B, Olivia H and Lily M who ran in the girls replay team and came first. Olivia H also won her individual event.
Skipping Workshop – Another successful skipping workshop was held at the start of the term. Every class had the opportunity to develop their skipping skills and then share in a ‘showcase’ assembly at the end of the day.
The member of staff responsible for PE and Sport Funding has booked a non-contact day to revise the current action plan so that it reflects current national guidance. This is specifically linked to the impact that funding is having upon standards in PE & Sport and whether the actions completed are sustainable.A new version of the action plan will be available on the school website once this has been completed.
The term continues to see a wide range of sporting activities across the school together with a number of sessions led by external professionals.
· Netball – the Netball team played against a very strong Grangefield team. Whilst Gotherington did not win this time the team kept their spirts up and continued to work hard throughout the match.
· Football Match – the football team played against Grangefield away. The team gave a very strong performance, playing well as a team which was reflected in the well-deserved 8-1 victory.
· Swimming – Year 3 have started their block of 10 swimming lessons
· Football Match – The football team played against Glenfall School. It was a close contest, ending in a 1-2 win for Glenfall. This was their first defeat of the season with them losing out to a winning goal for Glenfall in the final seconds of the match.
· Girls’ football - The Years 5 and 6 girls’ football team took part in a football tournament on the astroturf pitch at Kayte Lane. The girls played very well, and reached the semi-finals. A wonderful achievement for the team.
· Cross Country –Races continue to be held after school. A special mention for Monty S who has had three first place finishes
· KS2 Sports Coaching – Year 6 had the first of three sports coaching sessions looking at alternative and inclusive sports
